About this practice

Derby PDSA Pet Hospital in Derby

PDSA (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals) is a veterinary charity in the UK that provides free or low-cost veterinary care to pets of eligible owners who are struggling financially. They operate through a network of PDSA Pet Hospitals and Pet Care vehicles across the country, offering a range of services from preventative care to emergency treatments. While they primarily focus on common domestic pets like cats, dogs, and small furries, specific services may vary by centre.

What makes PDSA special is their charitable mission to ensure that no pet suffers due to an owner's inability to pay for veterinary treatment. They are funded by public donations and provide a vital safety net for vulnerable pets and their owners. Their approach to care emphasises both treatment and education, promoting responsible pet ownership to improve animal welfare.

To access PDSA's services, pet owners must meet specific eligibility criteria, usually related to means-tested benefits. They do not offer parking and emergency services are provided during their opening hours, which vary by location. Registration is required for eligible pet owners to receive care.

Derby PDSA Pet Hospital is based at 200 City Gate, Derby, Derbyshire, DE24 8WY in Derbyshire. The practice treats birds, cats, dogs, exotic/wild, poultry and small mammals.

2 stars because I was seen quicker than my appointment. But the person I dealt with (bald guy) was so rude and obnoxious. I was presented with a choice of have my cat put down or try and treat her. I asked if I can think about it and his response was so blunt and so cold. I then asked if I can just have a minute outside to make sure I'd made the right decision. "Well there's lots of paperwork to go through and I'm supposed to finish soon". Vile, disgusting behaviour. A signature and printing my name is all I had to do. Click a few things is all he had to do. The receptionists were respectful. But he was an obnoxious, rude and down right arrogant man. I'm sat crying my eyes out and all he cares about is "oh paperwork this. I finish soon that". Clearly needs to be in a different field. The man had no respect. No empathy.

Called to make an appointment for my dog who I believed to have an ear infection. She couldn’t walk and was going floppy and collapsing. They said 10:30am. I was out the door ready with two kids and my dog. Got there and they told me it was 9am my appt? Despite me clarifying with the caller on the phone it was 10:30am. I explained to them and they weren’t having any of it. I was in tears explaining my dog needs to be treated. Weren’t having any of it. Made an appt with my local vet who saw and treated my dog straight away with an emergency appointment and needed a variety of antibiotics. I know people who swear by the PDSA. But in my case, I was not happy. The fact they turned away a dog who was clearly in need didn’t and will never sit right with me.

Absolutely outstanding. Our lab Bill needed urgent surgery out of hrs last night after cutting a leg artery. Our vet was closed so these angels were a God send. Without them we would have lost our boy. Not insured either! But made the bill more affordable where possible. Can’t thank them enough. ALL staff were brilliant for us and the patient! Xx

We rang PDSA on Easter Sunday evening after our dog had a severe allergic reaction to an unknown item. We had him there in 20 minutes just as he collapsed and they rushed him into the back and got him stable immediately. Communication was amazing, the vets and reception staff were so warm, calming and understanding. Melvin is now recovering at home with some tablets for the rest of the week and we couldn’t be more grateful to everyone at PDSA. Thank you so much!
