What the spread tells you

The same named plan is not the same price everywhere. Practices set their own monthly figure, so the gap between the cheapest and dearest branch of a single scheme is often larger than the gap between two rival schemes.

Of the widely offered plans, Medivet Healthcare Plan — Medivet sits lowest at a typical£15.50 a month, and Pet Health Club — IVC Evidensia highest at£22.99. Within Medivet Healthcare Plan — Medivet alone the recorded range runs from£12 to £56.70. However, it does not tell the full story as some plans will offer more than others.

What is a pet health plan?

It is a monthly subscription to routine care at your own vet — typically the annual booster, flea and worm treatment, a microchip and a couple of health checks, plus money off things the plan doesn't cover. It is not insurance: it pays for the care a healthy pet needs on schedule, not for illness or accidents.

How much do pet health plans cost in the UK?

Across the 11,776 plans we hold from 2,144 practices, the middle price is £20.99 a month. Dog plans usually cost more than cat plans, large dogs more than small, and puppy and kitten plans sit above adult ones because of the vaccination course.

Are pet health plans worth it?

It depends entirely on what your own practice charges. Add up its booster, a couple of consultations and the flea and worm products you buy anyway, then compare that with twelve monthly payments. Our postcode tool does that sum using the prices each practice publishes, so you get an answer for your vet rather than an average.

Is a health plan the same as pet insurance?

No. A health plan covers predictable, routine care at one practice. Insurance covers unpredictable vet bills for illness and injury. Many owners hold both; a plan will not pay for an emergency operation.

Can I cancel a pet health plan?

Almost all plans are monthly direct debits you can cancel, but several are on a minimum term, and some ask you to repay the discounted value of treatment already used in that plan year. Check the terms before signing — it is the clause owners most often miss.
