Finding a vet isn't only about the nearest one. Here's what's genuinely worth checking before you register your pet.
Every veterinary surgeon in the UK must be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) to practise legally. Practices can also hold RCVS Practice Standards Scheme accreditation — a voluntary award that sets minimum standards for facilities, staffing and equipment. Every practice on our directory shows its RCVS status, so you can confirm the practice is properly regulated before you visit.
A consultation fee is the price you'll pay most often, so it's the fairest single comparison. But also look at vaccination and neutering costs — a cheap consultation can be offset by dearer boosters. We publish each practice's own figures for all of these, taken straight from their websites, so you're comparing real prices rather than adverts.
Independent practices are often locally owned and may offer a more personal relationship. Corporate groups (CVS, IVC Evidensia, Medivet, VetPartners, Linnaeus and others) tend to have consistent pricing and 24-hour referral networks. Charity clinics run by the PDSA, RSPCA and Blue Cross offer low-cost or free care for owners on certain benefits. Our listings show which type each practice is, so you can choose the model you're comfortable with.
Not every practice provides out-of-hours cover. Before you need it, check whether your nearest vet handles emergencies overnight and at weekends, or refers to a dedicated 24-hour hospital. When you search by postcode we show opening hours, so you know straight away whether a practice is open when you're likely to need it.
