What cats are vaccinated against
The UK core vaccination for cats covers three diseases, usually given as one combined injection:
- Feline panleukopenia (feline infectious enteritis) — often fatal in kittens.
- Feline herpesvirus and feline calicivirus — the two causes of "cat flu", which can leave lifelong problems.
Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) is strongly recommended for any cat that goes outdoors and is included in the standard booster at most practices. Rabies is only needed for travel.
Kitten vaccination course cost
A kitten needs two injections, normally at nine and twelve weeks, with a health check at each visit. Most UK practices charge £75–£110 for the pair. Kittens can go outdoors about a week after the second injection.
Booking the course as a package is nearly always cheaper than paying per visit, and many practices bundle in a free flea and worm treatment or a discount on neutering — worth asking about, since neutering is the next bill you'll face.

Are annual boosters really needed every year?
Not every component is annual. Current BSAVA guidance is that panleukopenia immunity typically lasts three years, while the cat flu components and FeLV need more frequent boosting. In practice most vets run a yearly appointment that includes a full health check and boosts only what's due.
That yearly health check has real value — it's how dental disease, weight problems, thyroid issues and kidney disease get picked up early in cats. If your practice charges a booster fee well above £81 though, it's fair to ask what's included and whether a three-year protocol applies to your cat.
Health plans and vaccination
Almost every practice health plan is built around the annual booster. Typical cat plans run £11–£20 a month (£132–£240 a year) and cover the booster, year-round flea and worm treatment, two health checks and a discount on other services.

How to pay less
- Check published prices near you — the gap between the cheapest and dearest practice within a few miles is routinely £20–£30 per booster. Search your postcode to compare.
- Don't let the booster lapse. If more than about 15 months passes, most practices restart the full primary course — roughly £90 instead of £72.
- Ask what's in the price. Some practices include the health check in the booster fee and some bill it separately as a consultation.
- Check charity support. The PDSA and some local rescues help with vaccination costs for owners on qualifying benefits.
