Kennel Cough in Dogs: Symptoms, Treatment and UK Costs

Kennel cough (infectious tracheobronchitis) is one of the most common respiratory infections in dogs. It's highly contagious and can spread wherever dogs socialise — not just in kennels.

    Symptoms to Watch For

    • A persistent, harsh "honking" cough
    • Retching or gagging after coughing
    • Runny nose or watery eyes
    • Reduced appetite or lethargy (in more severe cases)

    When to See the Vet

Most cases of kennel cough resolve on their own within 1–3 weeks. However, you should see the vet if your dog:

    • Is a puppy, elderly, or has existing health conditions
    • Stops eating or drinking
    • Has difficulty breathing or becomes lethargic
    • Shows no improvement after a week

    Treatment Costs

    • Consultation: £30–65
    • Antibiotics (if needed): £20–50
    • Anti-inflammatories: £15–30
    • Cough suppressants: £10–25

    Prevention

The kennel cough vaccine (Nobivac KC) costs £30–50 and is given as a nasal spray. It's required by most kennels and is recommended for dogs who socialise regularly.
