Independent Vetcare (IVC) was formed in 2011 and merged with Sweden's Evidensia in 2017 to create IVC Evidensia. Backed today by EQT, Silver Lake and Nestlé, it is by some distance the largest UK veterinary employer. Most acquired practices keep their original trading name, so it is often not obvious that a local vet is IVC-owned — a key reason we publish this ownership register.

Operating as the largest veterinary employer in the United Kingdom, this corporate group has expanded rapidly through widespread practice acquisitions. Originating in Bristol as Independent Vetcare in 2011, the organisation merged with the Swedish veterinary provider Evidensia six years later. Today, institutional investors including EQT and Silver Lake, alongside global conglomerate Nestlé, back the multinational holding company. Across its network of more than nine hundred UK locations, the business operates a broad clinical mix, encompassing standard first-opinion surgeries, specialist referral centres, and out-of-hours emergency arrangements. This historic expansion, absorbing hundreds of formerly independent practices, reflects the broader consolidation trend currently under scrutiny by the Competition and Markets Authority.

Despite this scale, pet owners rarely realise they are using a corporately owned facility. The parent company routinely retains the original trading names and local signage of the surgeries it buys, meaning affiliation is often visible only in legally required small print. Inside the clinics, professionals generally utilise centralised administrative support, but pricing remains largely decentralised. Fee structures for consultations, procedures, and medications are typically determined at branch level rather than through uniform national tariffs. Consequently, treatment costs can vary considerably between different surgeries within the same group, reflecting localised overheads and available diagnostic equipment.
