Following the Competition and Markets Authority's [market investigation](/blog/cma-vet-sector-reforms-2026), owners now have more rights — and more information — than at any point in UK history. ## The 10 factors that actually matter ### 1\. Location & accessibility Routine visits should be a quick drive — but think about emergencies, parking, and step-free access for elderly pets. ### 2\. Opening hours Evening and Saturday slots dramatically reduce time off work. Check whether the practice closes for lunch. ### 3\. Out-of-hours cover Does the practice have its own OOH team, or does it refer to a third-party provider such as Vets Now? The latter typically adds £100–£300 to any nighttime emergency. ### 4\. RCVS Practice Standards accreditation Look for the badge — "General Practice", "Small Animal Hospital" or "Tier 3". Each tier requires verified facilities, equipment and clinical governance. ### 5\. Price transparency From 2026, practices must publish indicative prices for common services and prescription fees. A practice that still refuses to quote a consultation fee is a red flag. ### 6\. Range of in-house services Imaging, in-house bloods, dental X-ray, ultrasound and surgical capability mean fewer onward referrals. Referrals are clinically often correct but cost more. ### 7\. Independent or corporate? Both models can be excellent. Independents (53% of UK practices in our dataset) often offer continuity with the same vet; corporate groups (47%) frequently have better OOH, imaging and extended hours.
